Category: General Drink to Give, Support Our Soldiers!

    April 7, 2016

Join us at Mission as we drink to support the Jewish War Veterans’ Support Our Soldiers (SOS) program for our FIRST ever happy hour fundraiser, just in time to send some matzah overseas!

Between 6-8pm, a $5 donation at the door includes drink specials and doing a mitzvah! After happy hour ends, the festivity will continue with $4 Tecates, $6 happy hour wines, $7 Mission margaritas, and a surprise specialty cocktail.

With Passover coming up, we send matzah (and more) to Jewish troops who are based overseas to help make home feel a little less far away. Passover is one of the hardest Jewish holidays to practice overseas due to its dependence on Jewish ritual and custom. (Regular care packages are also sent any active duty person via the National SOS program.)

We will also have a donation box available at The Mission where you can bring non-perishable items (matzah, macaroons, etc.) or other essentials such as batteries, socks, and toothpaste to contribute to the care packages.

Drink and donate at the same time!

    May 31, 2016

Jewish American Heritage Lecture at National Archives in partnership with the Jewish Historical Society of Greater Washington

Featuring Dr. Gary Zola, We Called Him Rabbi Abraham: Lincoln and American Jewry, a Documentary History

    Tuesday, May 31, 2016, 7:00 p.m.

Dr. Gary P. Zola, a distinguished scholar of the American Jewish experience and an ordained rabbi, traces President Lincoln's fascinating connections to and legacy with Jewish Americans. Using newspaper clippings, letters, poems, and sermons - many never published before - Dr. Zola helps us understand why Lincoln was given the affectionate title "Rabbi" by America's small, but growing Jewish population.

Dr. Zola will be in conversation with Erin Carlson Mast, Executive Director at President Lincoln's Cottage. A book-signing follows the program.
Dr. Zola is the executive director of The Jacob Rader Marcus Center of the American Jewish Archives and Edward M. Ackerman Family Distinguished Professor of American Jewish Experience & Reform Jewish History at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in Cincinnati.
