“The day that will live on in infamy” was the seminal phrase President Franklin D. Roosevelt used in his historic address to describe the Empire of Japan’s attack on the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, in December 1941. Immediately following his speech, the U.S. Congress voted to declare war on Japan. Daniel Martinez is the chief historian for the Pearl Harbor National Memorial, including the USS Arizona Memorial and visitor center, the USS Utah Memorial, the USS Oklahoma Memorial; the Chief Petty Officer Bungalows on Ford Island; and the mooring quays that were part of Pearl Harbor's "Battleship Row."
